Application of Coated Talcum Powder in Polypropylene System

Тальк has a flaky structure, which makes finer talc a reinforcing filler for polypropylene. Adding ultrafine talc to the polypropylene system can significantly improve the rigidity, surface hardness, heat creep resistance, and electrical insulation of polypropylene products. It can greatly reduce the shrinkage of polypropylene materials. This helps to improve the dimensional stability of products and reduce deformation during the molding process.

However, due to the high surface energy of ultrafine talc powder, it is easy to agglomerate. The inorganic powder is not compatible with the organic polymer matrix. This results in a significant decrease in the impact performance of coated polypropylene after adding ultrafine talc powder. By surface coating of it, the interfacial compatibility between talc powder and polypropylene can be effectively improved. Its surface polarity can be reduced, the dispersibility of talc powder in the polypropylene system can be promoted. The mechanical properties of modified polypropylene can be further improved, and its application in various fields can be broadened.

As can be seen from the above figure, although the addition of talc powder to the polypropylene composite material can increase the bending modulus and reduce the shrinkage rate, the impact performance is significantly reduced. The impact strength and bending modulus of the modified talcum powder in the polypropylene composite material are significantly improved compared with the unmodified talcum powder.

As can be seen from the above figure, when the dispersion is good enough, the impact strength of the composite material filled with polypropylene talc gradually increases with the fineness of the talc powder. The smaller the talc particle size, the greater the impact strength. This is because there are large particles in the coarse powder. They produce stress concentration points, so the impact strength is poor. And from the above figure, it can also be seen that after the coarse powder is surface modified, the physical properties of the fine powder can be achieved. The problems of the fine powder being difficult to feed and disperse can be improved.
